How do I enter a task and a milestone into a Microsoft Project schedule?

A milestone is a significant event in the project, usually completion of a major deliverable. A milestone, by definition, has duration of zero and no effort. This lesson covers entering a task and milestone into a Microsoft Project schedule.

Click the Task Grid

  • Click in the task grid where you want the task to appear.

Note: It is also possible to click the Task button on under the Tasks tab to insert a new task.

Type the Task Name

  • Type the task name.

View the Task and Gantt Bar

  • View new task and the associated bar to the right in the Gantt Chart. Repeat as necessary to enter additional tasks.

Click the Task Grid

  • Click the task grid where the milestone will be entered.

Click Milestone

  • Click Milestone on the ribbon.

Type the Name of the Milestone

  • Type the name of the milestone.

View the Milestone

  • Tap your Enter key and view the newly created milestone and its associated diamond to the right in the Gantt Chart.
