How do I add new links to the navigation?

This article shows how to configure new links in the Navigation Menu (Quick Launch).

Note: The instructions in this article are applicable to Administrators in the Top Level Site as well as to Power Users who have Owner permissions on a workspace.

1. Navigate to Manage Communities

  1. Select the Settings Gear icon on the Icon Bar.
  2. Under the Configuration heading, select Manage Communities.

2. Edit the Community Quick Launch (Navigation)

Under the Action heading, click QuickLaunch (Navigation) for the desired Community.

3. Create a New Heading

Note: You could select the New button based on the type of desired link, whether a Navigation Link (sub-link to a heading) or a New Heading.  A Heading Link can be by itself, or it can also have children links below it.

4. Enter the Heading Details

  1. Enter the URL for the web address.
  2. Enter the Description.  This is the title that will appear on the Quick Launch.
  3. When finished, click the OK button.

Note: If the new Quick Launch link is an internal link to a list or library within your Site App, ensure that the URL is a relative URL.  A relative URL means that the portion of the URL up to the Site App name is removed.  If the link is an external link, you must include the full URL, including the http(s), etc.

Note:  You may enter a specific view into the Quick Launch URL.  If you do so, clicking on the link in the Quick Launch will overwrite the List App's default view settings.

5. Create a New Navigation Link (Child Link)

Note: Select the New button based on the type of desired link, whether a Navigation Link (sub-link to a heading) or a New Heading.  A Navigation Link will display as a child to one of the current headings in your Navigation Menu (Quick Launch).

Note: At this time, you CANNOT add a Navigation Link (child link) to the Global My Workplace Community.  You CAN add a Navigation Link (child link) to the site-level Navigation Menu - the communities that show on the site's navigation menu. For example, in a workspace, there's a site-level community called My Workplace.  This is a different community than the "Global My Workplace" icon on the Icon Bar.  The Global My Workplace Navigation is configured on the Manage Communities at the top level. The workspace-level My Workplace Community is configured on the workspace's Manage Communities page, and it CAN have Navigation Links (child links) since it's site-level navigation.

6. Enter the Navigation Link Details

  1. Enter the URL for the web address.
  2. Enter the Description.  This is the title that will appear on the Quick Launch Bar.
  3. Select the Heading from the Heading drop down menu.  This option is only available if you are creating a Navigation Link (child link).
  4. When finished, click the OK button.

Note: If the new Quick Launch link will be an internal link to a list or library within your Site App, ensure that the URL is a relative URL.  A relative URL means that the portion of the URL up to the Site App name is removed.  In this example, the full URL would be https://apps22.epmlive.com/sites/ckg1024/Lists/Issues; then the relative URL is /sites/ckg1024/Lists/Issues.

Note:  You may enter a specific view into the Quick Launch URL.  If you do so, clicking on the link in the Quick Launch will overwrite the List App's default view settings.  An example would be "sites/ckg/1024/lists/issues/my active issue summary.aspx"

7. Updated Community Navigation with New Links

  1. Now the new Navigation Link shows as part of a drop down menu from the selected Heading.
  2. Now the new Heading shows.
