How do I create a new project from the Project Center?

A project item is a list item within the Project Center used to identify a new or existing project within a site. The project item contains all the associated meta data about the project (e.g. project name, project manager(s), project start and finish dates). A project item can be created from several places, including the Project Center, from the Create New menu, and from the Home Page. This article covers creating a project item from the Project Center.

Note Naming Convention Best Practice: Do NOT to use the following characters when naming a list item:

  • Tilde (~)
  • Number sign (#)
  • Percent (%)
  • Ampersand (&)
  • Asterisk (*)
  • Braces ({ })
  • Backslash (\)
  • Colon (:)
  • Angle brackets (< >)
  • Question mark (?)
  • Slash (/)
  • Plus sign (+)
  • Pipe (|)
  • Quotation mark (")
  • Comma (,)
  • Parentheses {()}
  • Hyphen (-)
  • Semicolon (;)
  • Apostrophe (')
  • Quotation Mark (!)
  • At Sign (@)
  • Dollar Sign ($)
  • Caret Symbol (^)
  • Equal Sign (=)

Additionally, do not use the period character consecutively in the middle of a file name, or the period character at the end of a file name. Lastly, do not start a file name by using the period character.

1. Navigate to  Projects

  • Click the Projects link on the Navigation Menu.

2. Click the New Item Button

  • In the Project Center, click the New Item button.

3. Enter the Project Name

  1. Enter the project name.
  2. Complete additional fields.

Note: The required fields indicated with a red asterisk must be completed prior to saving.

4. Complete Additional Fields

  • Complete any additional fields.

Note:   The Project Manager field is for launching the Resource Planner and Cost Planner for that project (and must also be project owner). Any name entered into the Planners field must also be granted Owner rights (permissions) when building the Project Team (Edit Team). Although it is possible to have multiple names in the Planners field, it is recommended to enter only one name in the Planners field.  The purpose of the Planners Field is to allow someone other than the Project Manager to help with the project plan. Additionally, if you add someone as a project owner, and leave the Planners Field blank, then they can open the Project Planner.

Update Notifications: In order to receive Update Notifications, the Project Manager must also be listed in the Planners field. Additionally, the creator of the Project Item will continue to get update notifications.

5. View the Type-Ahead Feature

  • The type ahead feature functions differently in the 5.x version. Once you start to add the letters in the resource name, a type ahead drop down list appears with resource options.

6. View the Budget and Planned Benefits Fields

Note: If you are using the Enterprise version, the Budget and Planned Benefits values should be entered in the Cost Planner.

7. Select from the Menu Options

  • Each of the fields displayed above, make up the prioritization score. Select an option from each drop down menu. The prioritization score is displayed in the Project Control Page (a.k.a. View Page) and in select views in the Project Center.

8. Select the Project Update Method

  • Select the Project Update Method.

Note:  The "Manual" option allows managers to manually enter project information. The "Schedule Driven" option will update project fields from the Online Planner or Microsoft Project schedule. With the Manual Project Update method selected, the following fields are editable:

  • Project Start
  • Project Finish
  • Project Actual Start
  • Project Actual Finish
  • Project Work
  • Project Actual Work
  • Project Actual Cost
  • Project Percent Complete

9. Click Save

  • Click Save.

10. View Project View Form (Control Page)

11. Click the Close Button

  • Click Close.

12. View Project in Project Center
